This town was established February 2, 1732, from part of Oxford and certain common lands. Part of a gore of common land known as "Middlesex Gore" was annexed June 25, 1794. Parts of Dudley were set off to Southbridge in 1816 and 1822, and a part was included in the new town of Webster, March 6, 1832.
