On October 15, 1673, Quobauge was ordered to be named "Brookfield," but it was not incorporated as a town until November 12, 1718. A part was included in the new town of Western (now Warren) in 1742. Changes in the boundary lines between Brookfield and New Braintree were made in 1791 and 1792. A part was set off as North Brookfield in 1812, and West Brookfield was established in 1848.
