The town of Nantucket, Nantucket County, was originally called "Nantuckett," but the name was changed by the Province of New York to which it belonged, June 27, 1687, "to be called by the Name of the Trustees of the Freeholders & Comonalty of the Towne of Sharborn."
In 1692 the island of Nantucket was granted to the Province of Massachusetts Bay.
June 8, 1713, the island of Tuckannock was granted to Nantucket [sic].
June 8, 1795, the name was changed from "Sherburn" to Nantucket.
